Brighton Artists Open Houses

This year we opened our studio as part of the Brighton Artists Open Houses. This is an annual event running concurrently with Brighton Festival. This year there were over 200 Open Houses and approximately 1200 artists.

The Open Houses are an excellent way to reach a broad spectrum of the public. We had visitors from all over the world and with a wide range of art interests. It was fascinating to see the way different people engaged with the work.

My coal mining project, A New Topography of the Durham Coalfield, prompted numerous conversations with people whose relatives had worked down the pit.

Similarly Remains, which presents a series of cremation urns, provoked fascination and the occasional shudder. One visitor suggested that the sweet smell I detected while working with the urns could be due to Sugars of Lead. Further research indicates that so called sweet leads taste sweet rather than smell sweet, so the mystery is not yet conclusively solved.

I’m exhibiting my work with my wife Klara in our studio (Flamingo Studio) throughout May.

I’m showing prints from A New Topography of the Durham Coalfield and a selection of my current work in progress.
